How to trade
on Polymarket from Australia
Polymarket runs on the Polygon blockchain and requires a crypto wallet holding USDC: a real barrier for beginners. This guide takes you from zero to your first trade in about 30 minutes, with clear explanations at every step. No prior crypto knowledge required.
How to get started on Polymarket
Create an account on Coinbase, Kraken or Independent Reserve (all available in Australia with AUD bank transfers). Complete identity verification (KYC: Australian drivers licence or passport required). Buy USDC: start with A$50–200 to learn the process. When withdrawing, select the Polygon network (not Ethereum or Base: fees are much lower).
Go to metamask.io and install the browser extension for Chrome, Firefox or Brave: or download the mobile app. Create a new wallet and carefully write down your 12-word seed phrase. These words are the key to your wallet: never share them with anyone and store them offline, ideally on paper in a safe location.
Click the network dropdown menu in MetaMask. Select "Add network" then "Popular networks." Choose Polygon and click "Approve." Your MetaMask can now receive USDC tokens on the Polygon network.
Initiate a USDC withdrawal from your exchange. Copy your MetaMask wallet address. Select the Polygon network: not Ethereum (gas fees are 100x higher) and not the exchange's own network. The transaction takes 2–5 minutes to arrive. Verify receipt in MetaMask before proceeding.
Go to polymarket.com. Click "Sign In" in the top right corner. Select "MetaMask." A MetaMask window opens: click "Connect." Your Polymarket account is now created. Your wallet address is your identity: there is no email or password. Anyone with your seed phrase controls your account.
Click "Deposit" in Polymarket and transfer your USDC from your MetaMask. Browse markets in "Explore." Choose an event. Select "Yes" or "No," enter your amount in USDC, click "Buy." Confirm the transaction in MetaMask. Your position appears in "Portfolio." Markets resolve when the outcome is verified: settlement is automatic and on-chain.
What can go wrong (and how to fix it)
The most common mistake: withdrawing USDC on Ethereum instead of Polygon. Result: funds arrive but with very high gas costs. Solution: always select "Polygon" when withdrawing from Coinbase or Kraken. If you already withdrew on Ethereum, you can bridge using Polygon Bridge.
You transferred on Polygon but MetaMask is showing Ethereum Mainnet. Click the network selector and switch to Polygon. Your USDC should appear. If not, add USDC as a custom token: contract 0x2791Bca1f2de4661ED88A30C99A7a9449Aa84174.
Deposits from MetaMask to Polymarket go through an internal Polymarket contract and can take a few minutes. If pending for more than 10 minutes, refresh the page. Make sure you confirmed the transaction in MetaMask (check the MetaMask activity tab).
Coinbase and Kraken require Australian government-issued ID. Ensure your ID is not expired and photos are clear. Independent Reserve (Australian-founded) often has a smoother KYC process for Australian residents if other exchanges reject you.
